Over the last ten years, my dance work has shifted increasingly from live performance to a medium that I call “screendance”- it’s not quite a music video, but it couldn’t be performed live either. It is dance that is built for exclusively for film, but it is not merely a film of a dance. Working as choreographer, performer, director, editor, sound designer and occasionally camera operator on my own screendances has introduced an inherently multimedia element to the ways in which I now think about dance as a tool to be used to create art. These pieces act as moving illustrations for music, dreamscapes come to life, and hyperbolic emotional snapshots. With this opportunity to merge performance, choreography, directing and editing, I not only offer the dance to be seen, but I control the proverbial lens through which we see it as well.
